Don't Let Your Pets get Ticked!

It's that time of year. And yes, Westcliffe has
ticks and fleas.

According to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention
www.cdc.gov, lyme disease is on the rise in both humans and
pets.  Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of infected
blacklegged ticks.  Typical symptoms in humans include fever,
headache and a rash.  If left untreated, infection can spread to
joints, the heart and the nervous system.  Early detection is
crucial.  If you have been bitten by a tick and experience any of
these symptoms, seek medical treatment immediately and
notify your doctor of your tick exposure.

In dogs, symptoms can include lethargy, arthritis, loss of
appetite, fever, fatigue, kidney damage, heart disorders and
neurological disorders (including unusual aggression,
confusion and overeating.)  In cats symptoms can include
fever, arthritis, loss of appetite, fatigue, eye problems,
breathing disorders, heart disorders, a "trance-like' state and
possible sudden collapse.  If your pet experiences any of these
symptoms and could have been exposed to a tick, consult with
your veterinarian immediately.  Early treatment is less
expensive and offers a greater chance of full recovery for your
pet.

Both people and pets can encounter ticks in grassy and
wooded areas.  Wearing longs sleeves and pants when hiking
in wooded areas, cutting grass and removing leafy debris is
recommended.  Check yourself and your pet after walks,
removing any ticks promptly.  Check with your veterinarian on
safe products to use on your pet and apply as directed by the
manufacturer.  Pets should not be able to lick or ingest the
product as this may cause an adverse reaction.

One such product recommended as safe for most dogs and
cats is
Frontline Plus which kills fleas for three months and
ticks for one month when applied properly to the pet's skin.
Our prices are competitive with superstores and online
retailers.

As dogs from all over the country have
been transplanted from areas rampant
with the disease (especially after
Hurricane Katrina), heartworm is now a
valid concern in all areas of Colorado.
(standing water, heat) enable breeding
areas for mosquitoes and mosquitoes
carry disease to our pets.  If you travel with
your pet during the summer, your pet is at
greater risk of being exposed in one area
of the country and bringing the infected
mosquito back home to infect other
animals as well.

With the addition of tapeworm,
roundworm and hookworm treatment to
the standard preventive for heartworm,
there is even more reason to start your pet
on heartworm preventive products which
offer this additional protection.  If your pet
has never been on heartworm preventive,
a heartworm test will be required before
starting him on the preventive.  If your pet
is not on preventive, a heartworm test
annually will provide early detection if your
pet has been exposed to an infected
mosquito.
